Rakaia Garden Fete Brings Community Together

The 2024 Westpac Rescue Helicopter Rakaia Garden Fete was a resounding success, bringing together locals and visitors on Thursday 21 November, for a day of fun, connection, and fundraising for a life-saving cause.

The event raised an amazing $22,000 for the rescue helicopter service.

Held in the stunning setting of Sue and Ted Rollinson’s homestead and botanic gardens in Dorie, Rakaia, the event featured over 100 market stalls, delicious food vendors, live entertainment, and a captivating Christmas table demonstrations by renowned florist Anne Gane.

We enjoyed lovely weather for the majority of the day in a little microclimate while the surrounding area unfortunately experienced a lot of rain. Next year we hope that everyone will see the sun and come along.

The fete attracted families and visitors from across the region, with 100% of proceeds dedicated to supporting the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust. This critical service provides emergency air rescue and medical care to those in need across the South Island, making events like this vital to its continued operation.

“Every dollar raised at the Rakaia Garden Fete directly contributes to saving lives,” said Kathryn Marshall, Fundraising Director for the Trust. “We’re thrilled to see the community come together to enjoy a wonderful day while supporting such an essential service.”

The Trust extends heartfelt thanks to its incredible volunteers from the Lions Club of Rakaia and Westpac, whose tireless efforts made the fete possible.

A special acknowledgment also goes to Ted and Sue Rollinson for their longstanding generosity and dedication to the Trust’s mission.

These contributions are a testament to the community’s support for the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust. Together, we’re ensuring this vital service continues to provide life-saving care when it’s needed most.

Planning for next year’s event is already underway, and we look forward to welcoming even more people to join in the festivities and support this critical cause.

Setting up for the day in beautiful sunshine. How amazing to have Ted bring around tea and coffee for everyone and some beautiful savories to keep people going while they worked hard to get the stalls ready.

With over 100 stalls at the event there was an array of gorgeous New Zealand made and grown goods to buy. We were thrilled with the variety of businesses who chose to join us on the day and we will be looking forward to welcoming many of them back again in 2025.
