How long have you been a NZCC Rescue Crew member?
Officially started on the 24th May 2019, but had covered the helicopter a few times between April and May.
What motivated you to become a Rescue Crew member?
It is a unique job which I love; combination of flying, outdoors, search and rescue and emergency and critical care, the perfect recipe. Best job in the world!
What is your favorite part of the job?
Team work at it best. Work together to achieve something and seen it happen … make a difference in someones life.
Briefly describe one or two missions that stick in your mind the most/had the greatest effect on you
A few years ago while working in Wellington we’ve been tasked on a SAR mission for a missing kayaker. Weather wasn’t great, very windy and cold. It was getting dark. We searched the coast a few times and on one of the return legs we spotted the person floating at the harbour entrance; the strong current was taking him out to Cook Strait. We quickly set up and I was winched out to sea and after a little swim got this guy; We’ve been then winched in. He wasn’t injured but cold, very cold.
If we didn’t spot him at that precise moment it could have been a bad end story. We flown him to base and an ambulance took him to ED.
What are your main interests outside of work?
Love spending time outdoors with my wife and kids! On a personal side I am very interested in everything science and critical care.
What is your favourite food?
Not “really” food, but my favourite is chocolate, fudge and cookies ice-cream.
What is your favourite TV show?
Do not watch much TV these days but my old favourite was ER (of course) and the series Cosmos (by Carl Sagan).
What is your favourite animal?
Can’t have only a favourite … but horses and wolves are at the top of my list.
If you won $10 million tomorrow what’s the first thing you would do with the money?
Probably go on a holiday trip with my family and think about what to do with the rest of the money. Of course I will keep working in the rescue helicopter!!!
