Business Support Crew Update- May
It doesn’t seem that long ago we were celebrating the opening of the new air rescue centre here in Christchurch, followed by the arrival of the new H145 Airbus. Since then, we’ve had the opening of the hospital landing pad back in November, and in December, the launch of the new BK-117 helicopter at Greymouth.
These milestones reflect the ongoing evolution of the air rescue services across Canterbury and the West Coast. Improved coverage and response times have made a massive difference for both the crew and our patients. This was highlighted in March with the school bus crash near Murchison. Eight students were injured, with four rescue helicopters initially sent to the scene! Thankfully, all children were back home that same day, including three who were treated in ED.
On that Monday, March 9, the school bus crash was just one of seven mission flown that day. This is not the first time the crew has flown this many missions in a single day. Each mission has a $5,000 funding shortfall. It highlights just how critical our Business support is in keeping the choppers in the air and helping give patients the quickest and highest level of care possible.
For this, we thank all our business supporters for the crucial funding you provide. It’s always a pleasure to be able to talk directly to you, and, of course, I often hear about a staff or family member who has been picked up in the chopper. Thank you for sharing those personal stories. We’ve also had several new Mission Supporters over the past few months, where we’ve dedicated a full rescue mission to the business, so thank you too on behalf of those patients. Again, we’re grateful to all of our business supporters for your continued generosity.
