310 km in 3 days!
On the 18th of February South Canterbury Emergency Service personnel combined to ride 310km from the Alps to the Ocean (Mt Cook to Oamaru) in three days for three great charities. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter is proud and feels very fortunate to be one of the selected charities.
21 Emergency Service colleagues from Fire, Police, St John Ambulance and the Timaru Hospital Emergency Department took on this challenge, along with Sam Turpin and Trevor Karton. The ride would normally take 5-6 days, but the team completed it in just three days. Day 1 was Mt Cook to Lake Ohau (107km), day 2 was Lake Ohau to Otematata (79km). and day 3 was Otematata to Oamaru (124km).
Turpin says, “We see it as a great opportunity to give back to these three charities, that do such amazing things around us, with one of them being Westpac Rescue, this service saves lives day in day out. Without their service we know that many people would not be here, so this is us helping to give back.”
The teams target was to raise $15,000, $5000 for each Charity, but their givealittle page is sitting at over $25,000 dollars which they credit to the generosity of the general public and local businesses.
Timaru’s longest-serving firefighter, Tervor Karton is riding to give back to the rescue helicopter service that saved his father’s life. Karton said he had not just witnessed the helicopter save his father, but countless others he came across as a firefighter. “We’re regularly called to traffic accidents so we quite often get people into the helicopter and gone. I have a holiday home in Twizel and if anyone has a health issue in that area, you see the helicopter overhead.”
