Cantabrians dig deep for local rescue helicopter
Media Release 11/07/2010
Cantabrians have once again shown support for their local rescue helicopter, the Canterbury’s Westpac Rescue Helicopter, raising $263,573.53 for this year’s Chopper Appeal – and with Westpac covering the campaign costs, 100% of the amount raised goes to that service.
The Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust is joining with the 15 other rescue helicopter trusts nationwide and Westpac to extend a thank you to the hundreds of thousands of generous New Zealanders who donated a record $1,450,475.84 during the recent national appeal – nearly 28% more than last year.
Bridget Neill, Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust spokesperson says this year’s appeal was a huge success, and would make a vital contribution to the operation of region’s rescue helicopter services.
“We are continually overwhelmed by the generosity of locals, and are very proud to have the support of our community,” says Ms Neill.
The majority of funding for this unique service comes from communities around the country, from sponsors like Westpac, a proud supporter for nearly 30 years, and other fundraising activities.
Mark Graham, Westpac National Sponsorship Manager, says the dedicated teams of pilots, paramedics, flight crew and volunteers are what make the service special.
“This is a crucial service that can make a life or death difference for thousands of New Zealanders – next time it could be any one of us, a member of our family or a friend,” says Mr Graham.
“We’d like to extend our thanks to generous Kiwis who have dug deep this year to show their support, and our staff who pulled out all the stops to raise money for their local chopper.”
New Zealand’s rescue helicopters undertook close to 5,000 missions last year; each mission costs thousands of dollars and includes a mix of ambulance and search and rescue work.
Westpac is the major sponsor of the Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch Westpac rescue helicopters and Waikato Air Ambulance, and through the Westpac Chopper Appeal helps all other regional helicopter services around New Zealand.
Donations are welcome throughout the year and can be made at www.chopperappeal.co.nz or any Westpac branch.
